About  this  Portfolio
During its brief yet vital life cycle, milkweed plays a crucial role in supporting pollinators. It serves both as a rich nectar source and as an essential host plant for numerous species, most notably the monarch butterfly. Beyond monarchs, milkweed attracts honeybees, moths, hummingbirds, and native bees,
making it a cornerstone of ecological biodiversity.
The inspiration for this portfolio arose from observing the transformation of milkweed—from seed,
to flowering abundance, and back again to seed. As I learned more about its ecological importance,
my appreciation deepened, and I intentionally created space for this species in my garden. Watching it emerge, grow, and mature revealed a plant whose structure and purpose are inseparable,
shaped entirely by function and time.
This portfolio was created in my studio using light painting, my signature photographic technique. Working in complete darkness, I shape illumination by hand, directing a small light source across the plant to reveal form, texture, and detail while allowing surrounding areas to fall into shadow. This controlled approach enables careful study of each developmental stage while emphasizing the plant’s natural architecture.
Photographing Asclepias syriaca allowed me to document its full life cycle, from seed pod to pollinator flower and back to seed. By isolating each stage against a dark background, this portfolio invites focused observation of a plant that is often overlooked, yet essential—highlighting both its fragility and its enduring role in sustaining life.
